Design Lab: Ethnographic Observations

Ethnographic observation was done in a bid to study frequency of usage and observe behaviours in different social settings and contexts.

Along CTE expressway, Jason and I saw this motorbike rider watching a drama on his iPhone. He was also trying to multi-task by switching through different apps.

Many mobile phones were whipped out during queue lines so as to curb boredom.
Findings (both individual and group settings) showed highest mobile device usage in food-courts and hawker centres, minimal usage in cafes, high tea sessions and least usage at carnivals/play areas/attractions.

Ethnographic observation is not very effective for further research as it only validates the high extent of mobile usage; a motorbike rider was watching drama on his phone while riding and a taxi driver failed to see someone flagging, as he was busy checking his Grab application. In order to understand more of their actions, conversations must be initiated.
