Hypothesis: Meaningful recreational screen usage can take place if the following human needs are considered and motivated:

(1) Fulfilling emotional needs
(2) Taking care of core needs
(3) Achieving personal significance needs

Emotional needs refer to receiving pleasure from love, belonging, social and other needs or in the recreational screen-use context: Pleasure from unwinding, playing games, scrolling social media and watching shows.

Core needs subsume physiological needs required for basic functioning such as sleep and psychological needs that are fundamental for human well-being such as social connection.

Personal significance needs encompass the idea of meaningfulness – when the person is mindful of what he is doing, there is rationale and self-control in his motives, thus greater meaningfulness from his actions.

The harmony of these 3 needs can then enhance his capabilities for self-actualization needs, supporting his journey of flourishing.

The idea of being more human is also considered - taking control, re-connecting in deeper ways with himself, family and friends, and the world around them with meaningfulness from the purpose of their activities.
