#MADEdialogue: Designing for the Senses Workshop by Andrew Shea

Sensory Design can enhance health and well-being, which I came across a few good examples at the Enabling Festival. I was looking at Sense-making as part of my practice so I attended Andrew's workshop. Andrew shared how sight is dominating other senses and that we are using less of other senses as we fixate more on screens or visuals. He believes that good design should amplify other senses.

During the workshop, we got into small groups to create sensorial scenarios with different items / objects. By studying the objects, we analysed the sounds they make, the smell, the tactility and thought about how we could use these objects to express the emotional states throughout the narrative. The whole process was inspiring and imaginative.

For the 2nd day of workshop, I teamed up with Abi, Dana and Shiu Heng and we came up with a scenario of 'Year 3142'. In the future, students CCA include exploring new planets and we created an introspective journey for the students reaching a new planet SADA, we expressed their experiences and emotions through the use of various objects - how does melting diamonds/diamond rain sound like? how does jumping on sticky soil feel like? how does photosynthesis feel like on this new planet?
